In 1959 and 1963, he earned a master's and doctorate (Ph.D.) degree in electrical engineering and computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After finishing his education he later joined the faculty at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), the School of Engineering and Applied Science where he worked there as a computer science professor.
