The two engineering students have little to do but surf the net . They do not take long to compile a large list of bookmarks, grouped by subject. Then they think to put it on the web, and start working on creating a database program to handle it so that it can deliver results online.

Originally a bookmark created in 1994 called "Jerry and David's Guide to the World Wide Web", finally changed to yahoo! which stands for "Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle". Filo and Yang chose the word because they liked the common definition of the words, which came from Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift: "rude-strong-, unsophisticated -simple-, and uncouth -buddy-)

On January 18, 1995, domain yahoo.com. Because Yang and Filo realized the huge potential of their website, finally on March 1, 1995, Yahoo was inaugurated as a legal entity.

"Yahoo  akronim dari Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle."

Like most search engines on the web, Yahoo also diversified into a web portal. In the late 1990s, Yahoo !, MSN, Lycos, Excite, and other web portals experienced a rapid growth that led to each web portal competing to expand the reach of their services for longer internet users to stop at their web portal. The way they do is to acquire other companies that can provide the services they want.
